Chad Gaudin, a Rays reliever used often by manager Lou Piniella, is developing a reputation for throwing a hard and effective slider. The likes of Randy Johnson and John Smoltz have praised it, Smoltz even calling it "a gift". With Piniella possibly contemplating a move to the rotation (if the Rays starters fail to shape up), Gaudin could be shooting for A.L. Rookie of the Year. With 40 innings pitched last year, he remains eligible for the award this year.
